If your small business is doing well then there will probably come a point when you will need it to be less small. In other words, you’ll need to recruit some more staff to help with the workload. The moment when you first realise that you can’t manage everything by yourself any more and need to hire your first employee makes you feel fantastic; followed closely by a feeling of panic. There are all kinds of responsibilities that come with being an employer; everything from additional paperwork to knowing that if you mess up then all of a sudden someone else will pay for your mistake too.

Then there is the recruitment process itself, which can be long, arduous and often very frustrating. If you aren’t used to recruiting people, it can be quite a daunting experience and you will no doubt change your mind a million times about which five or six people you invite in for interview, let alone who you eventually offer the job to!

Recruitment agencies are an option; these are, after all, the experts when it comes to finding the right person for the right job. Unfortunately, they don’t come cheaply which usually puts them out of reach for most small business. Although if you calculated how much money your business is losing because of all the time you’re spending working on recruitment yourself, it might turn out to be cheaper to get the professionals in after all. Remember, though, that hiring staff is not an exact science and even recruitment agencies make mistakes sometimes…
